This photo gallery is the work of John McKay of Yellowknife, NT. John's private portfolio documents his love of nature in an ever-changing world. John will draw you in with his fluttering facts about birds. Not only is the Xantus Hummingbird endemic to southern Baja, but it weighs a mere 3 grams, the equivalent of 3 paper clips. He will point out that the very vocal Cactus Wren builds multiple nests on thorny surfaces but only lives in one to confuse predators. I was intrigued, and a slightly alarmed, to learn that Turkey Vultures with their sophisticated immune systems, survive on a strict diet of decomposing meat —nothing fresh, preferably torn apart— something no other animal on earth does. The more you see the world through John's lense, the more you may appreciate the fragile ecosystem that we live in. All these birds were photographed in Todos Santos in February 2024. The majority of images were taken at Galeria Victoria, the location of our vacation house. The notable exception is the Cassin's Kingbird which was photographed in the Sierras.

Steve Garland - The shot of the Xantus Hummingbird eyeing up the banana plany is exquisite! It’s captured an extraordinary moment in what might otherwise be considered the ordinary by some. My heart is sad for those who fail to see the sense of wonder and majesty in all they encounter. Such a beautiful shot!
