The Hour Glass bar in Hell's Kitchen features a mystery beer-in-a-bag and a shot for $9. Think Sour Toe cocktail: a
silly drink for tourists. Our bartender, Shawn, said we would see folks around town drinking out of brown bags. I
told him we already had. Don't worry Mom, as unlady like as it appears, it is just for fun, like getting Hyderized.
We have done a lot of street walking ....
in a lot of ways.
This city vibrates. The people, the poets, the painters, the artists. Billboards the height of office buildings in
Yellowknife. Moving through Times Square feels like shuffling through the sluggish, shoulder-to-shoulder crowds at
the Farmer's Market ... except you never get out. And there are way more Disney characters.
We are staying across from the Belesco, where Hedwig and the Angry Inch is playing. A crowd gathered
outside the theatre last night to catch a glimpse of Andrew Rannells after the show. Clearly he is a big deal but
theatre-types would already know that.
We were swallowed into Brazil Day yesterday. Just outside our hotel was a sweaty mass of street-dancing,
yellow and green t-shirts speaking a whole lot of Portuguese. Jason loved it.
My school (the International Center of Photography) is just around the corner from our hotel. I was overcome
with happiness looking through the school's display window (school is closed on Labour Day weekend). I thought:
"Anything is possible." In fact, that's the vibe this town gives off.
Back to the streets. Jason flies out Wednesday. School starts Sept. 8. We are squeezing in as much sightseeing as we can in the next two days.

Vivian - Oh the memories that are flooding back as I journey with you in New York City. Yes, the brown bags have been for a long time. So glad you are enjoying sights, sounds and New York at it's best as it usually is!!! In all the times I have been in New York City have never seen it any different, I wish now I had taken Dennis, we passed by several times but I didn't take him into the city. Nearly impossible to experience a lot in a few days but your 10 months at the International Center of Photography will be an amazing journey and the bonus you will discover every nook and cranny of New York City.
